Title: Perception for Autonomous Vehicles and Robotics

Abstract: In this talk we will discuss research within the Centre for Vision Speech and Signal Processing that supports perception for autonomous vehicles and robotics. The talk will start from a historical perspective briefly discussing research projects that led to the current day. These include the role of pre-attentive vision in driving and what machine learning can tell us about human attentive vision. Drawing on analogies between humans and machines, we will also look at the use of semantic cues in robot localisation. The talk will then discuss work into autonomous localisation in GPS denied areas using vision alone. Finally, the talk will present approaches to estimating the sematic layout of a scene from a single camera and the relationship of this work to monocular depth estimation.

Bio: Richard Bowden received a BSc in computer science from the University of London an MSc with distinction from the University of Leeds, and a PhD in computer vision from Brunel University for which he was awarded the 2000 Sullivan Doctoral Thesis Prize for the best UK thesis in computer vision. An award also won by two of his PhD students in 2017 and 2018. He is Professor of Computer Vision and Machine Learning at the University of Surrey, UK, where he leads the Cognitive Vision Group within the Centre for Vision Speech and Signal Processing. He has published over 250 papers, supervised over 30 PhD students and was awarded a Royal Society Leverhulme Trust Senior Research Fellowship in 2013. His research centres on the use of computer vision to locate, track, and understand humans. He has been an Associate Editor for Image and Vision Computing since 2009 and from 2013-2019 IEEE Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence. He was a member of the British Machine Vision Association (BMVA) executive committee and a company director for seven years. He is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a senior member of the IEEE, a Fellow of the International Association of Pattern Recognition and a Distinguished Fellow of the British Machine Vision Association.
